SAFETY TIPS
If you are going to be away for any length of time, listed below are a few suggestions as to how you can protect your home:
- House Checks – If you intend to be away from home for any length of time, you can arrange for our Village Code Enforcement Officers to make scheduled checks of your home, and patrol the area adjacent to our home. These officers are “off-duty” Suffolk County Police Officers who work for the Village. Prior to your departure, come to Village Hall to complete a confidential form. Please renew the house checks every 3 months if you require the service.
- Put lights on a timer.
- Put a radio on a timer.
- Stop the mail or ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the mail every day.
- Install motion sensor lights around the outside of your home.
- Arm your security system when you leave the house and when you go to bed at night.
- Don’t leave empty garbage cans in front of your home. Ask a neighbor or a friend to move them to the back of the house.
- Keep bushes trimmed so neighbors can see if someone is trying to break into the house through a window.
- Lock the doors if you’re working in the yard but away from the house.
- Always lock ground floor windows at night or when leaving the house.
- Lock your car and don’t leave valuables visible to people looking in the car.
- Don’t leave bikes or childrens’ toys in the front yard.

Be a good neighbor. If you see something that does not seem proper, call 911.
Parking Regulations – All parking regulations will be strictly enforced, including 2 hour parking in the business district, handicapped parking. There is no parking on Village Streets from 3 am to 6 am. Parking permits are available at Village Hall for weekend guests and emergency parking problems.
New Phone Number for Non-Emergency Calls – Many people are reluctant to call 911 for non-emergency police issues. It might be a loud party or a barking dog and rather than call 911, people don’t call at all.
A new non-emergency police number for residents to call with “Quality of Life” complaints has been created for Suffolk County Residents — 852- COPS (852-2677). The new service will free up 911 operators for true emergencies while providing citizens with an avenue for calling the police about non-life threatening situations. From now on, 911 should only be used for emergencies.
Remember – dial 852-COPS for non-emergency Police calls in Suffolk County.
